Thea’s Theme Breaks Maiden in Debut at Saratoga

owners and breeders

Bloodstock agent Clark Shepherd reports that THEA’S THEME (f, 2, Bayern–One More {GSP, $162,884}, by Holy Bull) became trainer Jeremiah Englehart’s second winner of the day at the Spa and eighth 2-year-old winner this year when she broke her maiden in determined fashion. The 2-1 choice closely tracked the pacesetter behind a :22.23 first quarter. Jockey Jose Ortiz coaxed the bay alongside the leader with three-eighths left to run and she poked her head in front and continued to widen her advantage into the stretch. Hard ridden to the wire, Thea’s Theme dug in tenaciously in the final furlong to just stave off a late bid from stablemate Critical Value (Bodemeister) by a nose. The fifth winner for her freshman sire (by Offlee Wild), Thea’s Theme is a half-sister to a yearling filly by Runhappy and a filly by Exaggerator born this year. Sales history: $90,000 Wlg ’17 KEENOV; $145,000 Ylg ’18 SARAUG. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $42,900. Owner-Highlander Training Center; Breeder-SF Bloodstock LLC (NY); Trainer-Jeremiah C. Englehart.

Clark Shepherd (Shepherd Equine Advisers), bloodstock agent for Larry Hirsch (Highlander Training Center), purchased Thea’s Theme at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton New York Preferred Yearling Sale from the consignment of Gainesway. The Bayern filly was identified as an OPTIMAL Mating Selection.
