STRIKINGLY SPUN (f, 2, Hard Spun – Smart Ashley, by Smart Strike) ran seven furlongs at Keeneland on Breeders’ Cup Friday to finish sixth, beating out half of the other horses at long odds of 33-1. Yesterday was the first time the $200,000 OBSMAR graduate had raced with Lasix. At odds of 2-1, she was no longer a long shot. She broke awkwardly and was not rushed early on, settling just off the rail in fifth place as the half went in 47.68 seconds. The Hard Spun filly moved quickly to the front three horses wide through the first turn, passed the favorite Peace Cruiser (Violence) at the head of the lane, and pulled away from Bolt for Allison (Bolt d’Oro) in the last furlong to win by 2 1/4 lengths under steady handling of jockey Francisco Arrieta.

Strikingly Spun’s dam, Smart Ashley, produced a yearling filly by Bernardini but was not bred for 2022 or 2023.
Strikingly Spun (Hard Spun) was acquired for $200,000 by Clark Shepherd (Shepherd Equine Advisers), bloodstock agent for owner Highlander Training Center (Larry Hirsch) at the 2022 OBS 2YOs in Training Sale from the consignment of Centofanti Thoroughbreds.
