Kupuna (c, 3, Hard Spun – Hanalei Hailey, by Malibu Moon)
Kupuna (c, 3, Hard Spun – Hanalei Hailey, by Malibu Moon) was making his second start back after a layoff from chipping a knee in last year’s Grade 2 Louisiana Derby. He tracked two to three wide around the first turn before moving forward to press the leader from the three path on the backstretch. The Hard Spun colt gained an advantage while well in hand leaving the three furlong pole and cleared nearing the stretch before shifting to the five path for the drive home. Kupuna held sway from a group of chasers through upper stretch and edged away through the final furlong to win by 6 lengths under jockey Reylu Gutierrez.
